Nautilus Pavilion

Situated along the British coastline, this permanent rammed-earth pavilion hopes to provide a place of quiet contemplation for passing adventurers as they saunter along the crumbling coastline. Inspired by the spiraling form of the nautilus shell, visitors are taken on a sweeping journey upward into a secluded, inner sanctum whereupon they can reflect in peace mediated by the faint echo of distant crashing waves.

Sandcastle, lighthouse, ruin - the pavilion’s silhouette can be interpreted in many ways as it stands firmly on the land’s edge, keeping watch over the shoreline. Grounded in its environment, the thick-set sloped walls emerge naturally from the surrounding earth which bulges upward as the pavilion’s conical form reaches toward the sky.
