Viola Fireplace

The client approached the designer with a vision to refurbish a large family dining room that could capture the earthy tones and textures of the surrounding natural landscape. Positioned midway along the length of the room, a complimentary mantelpiece and overmantel mirror was proposed that could act as a striking focal-point during formal dinner parties and cocktail evenings.

An orthogonal, stepped language was adopted for the mantelpiece design in order to create a strong sense of order and harmony which would help command attention in the large space. The complimentary marbles of calacatta viola and blanco mar are interrupted by a central gold-leafed inlay that injects a sense of drama into the composition; luring the eye inward.

The design of the mirror frame plays with the language of its counterpart; interrupting the orthogonal lines with moments of erosion and effusion. Laminated solid-surface sheets compose the frame which is carefully hand-finished to achieve a soft, honed appearance. The inclusion of crafted antique glass provides a rich, rustic feel.
